Embroidery Patterns & Transfers

WHICH PATTERN TYPE SHOULD I CHOOSE?

Iron-on transfers

Best for smooth, light-coloured fabrics that can take the required heat.

Press the design onto your fabric, then cover the lines with stitches. Transfers can usually be reused.

Stick and stitch

Ideal for dark or textured fabrics and clothes that can be washed.

Stick on the water-soluble design, stitch through it, then rinse it away. Each motif is used once.

Embroidery pattern FAQs

New to embroidery transfers or not sure which type to choose? Here are a few helpful answers before you start stitching.

Are these embroidery patterns suitable for beginners? +
Yes! Both iron-on transfers and stick and stitch patterns give you clear lines to follow, without tracing or drawing. Start with a small design and a few simple stitches. Each pack includes instructions and a beginner embroidery guide.
What’s the difference between iron-on and stick and stitch patterns? +
Iron-on embroidery transfers use heat to transfer the design onto smooth, light-coloured fabric. Stick and stitch patterns stick directly onto your fabric and wash away after stitching, making them useful for dark or textured fabrics and washable clothing.
Do the embroidery pattern lines wash out? +
Stick and stitch patterns are printed on water-soluble material that you rinse away after stitching. Iron-on transfer lines aren’t designed to wash out completely, so you should cover them with your stitches.
Are wash-away patterns the same as stick and stitch? +
Yes, the stick and stitch patterns here are self-adhesive, water-soluble designs, sometimes called wash-away or wash-off embroidery patterns. Cut out your motif, peel off the backing, stick it onto your fabric and stitch through it. Then rinse the pattern away following the pack instructions.
Can I reuse an embroidery transfer? +
Iron-on transfers can usually be used more than once, depending on your fabric and the heat and pressure used. Try the test transfers included in your pack first. Each stick and stitch motif is used once because the printed material dissolves when rinsed.
Can I use these embroidery designs on clothes? +
Yes! Add flowers, lettering or decorative stitches to shirts, jumpers, bags and more. Choose iron-on transfers for smooth, light-coloured fabrics that can take the required heat. Use stick and stitch for darker or textured fabrics, checking that your garment and threads are suitable for rinsing.
What else will I need? +
You’ll need fabric or an item to embroider, embroidery threads, a needle and small scissors. An embroidery hoop is helpful for many projects. If you’re starting from scratch, a Stitch Essentials set brings together hoops, threads, needles and other useful basics.
